I recently discovered this revolutionary product. It's a portable timepiece that runs without a battery and never needs to be plugged in and charged! It is powered by a high-efficiency internal spring that needs only occasional winding by the user.
The hands and numbers are surfaced with a proprietary coating that stores light energy. When the house lights go off, the hands continue to be illuminated for night viewing, again without battery power of any kind. The timepiece also contains a quick-set alarm function: simply twist a knob until the arm points to the desired wake time!
It folds up into its surprisingly small case for convenient portability. Incredibly, it keeps time even in areas with no wifi connectivity or cell phone signal.
Unfortunately, this timepiece is not available commercially. I found this prototype at a local thrift store for just $3. They had no idea what they had!

I think for your sequel you need to talk about reading with a flashlight, in bed, under the covers.
